Our Wearable Waste Fashion Show

On Tuesday afternoon at school our class made clothes out of recycled materials with Room 7. I made a dress and I was a villain. Mr Bell and Mrs Agnew were talking about what we could make with our materials, like dresses, warriors, animals but I already had an idea, but I didn’t share it right then.

I made my clothes out of rubbish bags, paper flowers, cardboard and polystyrene and paint. At first, I was so confused about how to make a dress and then one of my friends gave me an idea. So then I started to make my dress and then I found a red rubbish bag so I made that red rubbish bag into a t-shirt and then I added some black paper flowers onto my t-shirt and for my pants there was a black rubbish bag with some other black paper flowers.

I was so proud of myself when I was finished and then when I saw Ruzzel’s one she looked absolutely pretty because she spent 3 days making lots of newspaper flowers and she put them around her dress and her hat. Mrs Yumal helped Ruzzel learn how to make newspaper flowers and Ruzzel gave me one of her newspaper flowers and she was so kind!

On Thursday afternoon it was the day that Room 6 and Room 7 were doing the fashion show in front of the whole school and my friends and I were so nervous because I thought the people would make fun of our dress but they actually did not make fun of our outfits – they loved it.

When my bestfriend Thalia and I walked in the room where the whole school was, they were screaming and cheering for us and I was so happy because they loved it and even my friends too. My best friend said I want to do it again and then Room 7 and 6 did it again and it was for a pose and I loved how they were cheering and screaming for Room 7 and 6!

Littering devastates our oceans

Littering is so bad because animals can eat plastic, cans or anything that’s actually our rubbish! My teacher showed Room 6 a picture of a turtle’s shell caught in a plastic ring. It grew but the plastic made his shell deformed and he couldn’t go inside it. This made me sad and mad.

Once at my grandma’s house there was lots of rubbish so I went to pick it up. Now my grandma’s house is all tidy. At school we are becoming aware of our litter around and we pick up so much everyday. Yesterday I found 13 pieces of plastic! It’s getting better at school but we have to keep doing this and telling people how bad it is for our environment.

Last month I went to the beach with my family for my baby cousin’s birthday and I saw rubbish and so I picked up 20 pieces of rubbish and I was so proud of myself for picking up the rubbish and saving innocent sea animals from dying. Hopefully my cousins saw what I was doing and will all do this whenever they see litter.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of litter that has ended up in the ocean. It is so big and just like this because people around the world don’t care and years of litter have ended up there! In the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, over 100,000 marine mammals and one million  sea birds die every year! Come on – we have to do something to save our planet!

Our Sailing Day

Last Thursday Room 6 and Room 7 walked down to the Panmure Basin. As we were walking there my legs felt tired. These pretty girls named Steph, Ellie and this cool man Blair were there to teach us about sailing a boat. I was excited.

Room 7 went sailing first and Room 6 went to do some land activities. Some of the activities were about making knots, pulleys and all of the Room 6 liked the pulleys the most because Mrs Bell\Room 7 teacher grabbed a bag full of sand and we had to use the pulley and rope to lift it up.

Room 7 finished sailing and while they were sailing these girls named Graziel and Marii  flipped their boat 3 times while they were in it and then Room 6 got to go sailing. We had to choose a partner and my partner was Thalia and we went on the boat and I was the one who controlled the boat with the rudder. Thalia was the one who controlled the sail with the rope.

Steph and Ellie threw some rubber ducks and Thalia and I got ducks called Harold, Otis,  Waffle, Gerald, Harper. Thalia’s favourite duck was Otis and mine was Harper. Then I wanted to swim in the water so I just jumped off and had a little swim.

After  I had a swim I wanted to get in my boat but it was very hard so Thalia tried to help me but she couldn’t so she jumped off to try to help me but she forgot that you can’t help people in the water because the boat drifts away!  So Kava and Spencer came to us and helped us.

After that we hopped off the boat and we got changed and I was so hungry. After all that fun we had to write a feedback form for NZ Sailing. We also helped to get the boats clean and tidy. I was so happy when we got back to school to see my other friends. Thank you so much NZ Sailing for this fun day!
